They look nearly identical on television. Two teams of 12, match play, red and blue, a captain pacing the fairway in a golf cart. But the Presidents Cup and the Ryder Cup are separate events with different opponents, different owners, different formats and very different histories.

The Opponent Is the Real Difference
The Ryder Cup came first by nearly seven decades, and it locked up Europe. The Presidents Cup was created in 1994 to give everyone else a turn: Australia, South Africa, Japan, South Korea, Canada, South America and anywhere else outside Europe. That is why an Australian or a Japanese player will never appear in a Ryder Cup, and why a Spaniard or an Irishman will never play in a Presidents Cup.
It also explains the lopsided record. Europe has enough depth to field a team that beats the United States regularly. The International team draws from a much thinner pool spread across a dozen countries, and the results show it. The United States leads the Presidents Cup 13 wins to 1, with one tie.
LIV Golf Changes the Math
This is the most practical difference right now. The PGA Tour runs the Presidents Cup, and LIV golfers cannot earn points or be considered for captain’s picks. The Ryder Cup has no such bar, so players who left for LIV can still represent Europe or the United States there.
For the International team that matters more than it does for the Americans, since several of its strongest potential players are on LIV and simply cannot be selected.
Format, Day by Day
The Ryder Cup packs 28 points into three days. The Presidents Cup spread to four days in 2000 and now plays for 30 points. A team needs 15.5 to win the Presidents Cup outright.

Foursomes is alternate shot, where partners play one ball. Fourball is better ball, where each plays his own and the lower score counts. Both events use both formats and both finish with 12 singles on Sunday.
Nobody Gets Paid at the Presidents Cup

Two Smaller Quirks
Every Presidents Cup has an honorary chairman, and it is the head of state or head of government of the host country. Gerald Ford had the first one in 1994. Joe Biden held it at Quail Hollow in 2022 and Justin Trudeau in Montreal in 2024. The Ryder Cup has no equivalent.
The two events also used to alternate cleanly, Presidents Cup in even years and Ryder Cup in odd. The September 11 attacks pushed the 2001 Ryder Cup back a year and flipped the Presidents Cup into odd years. The COVID postponement of the 2020 Ryder Cup flipped it back. That is why the Presidents Cup is in an even year again.
