The First Chapter, and the Fifty Year Gap
Kansas City played in the first Super Bowl ever held, losing to Vince Lombardi’s Packers as fourteen point underdogs representing an AFL that most of the country still treated as the junior league. Three years later they answered it, beating the Vikings 23 to 7 behind MVP Len Dawson in the last game before the leagues merged. Then came the drought: fifty seasons without a return trip.
The Mahomes Era
The Chiefs reached five Super Bowls in six seasons starting in 2019, winning three of them. The back to back titles in the 2022 and 2023 seasons made them the first repeat champion in two decades. The run ended with a 40 to 22 loss to the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, a rematch of the game they had won two years earlier.
Before the Super Bowl: Three AFL Titles
As members of the American Football League the Chiefs won league championships in 1962, 1966 and 1969. The 1962 title came while the franchise was still the Dallas Texans, before the move to Kansas City the following year.
Where Things Stand Now
The Chiefs missed the playoffs entirely in the 2025 season, the first postseason since 2014 played without them. Seattle won Super Bowl LX over New England.
