How NFL Standings Work
Each conference sends seven teams to the playoffs: the four division winners, seeded one through four by record, and three wild cards, seeded five through seven. The top seed in each conference gets the only first round bye. Ties in the standings are broken by head to head record first, then division record, then record against common opponents, then conference record, then strength of victory and strength of schedule.
