There are 32 Division I men’s basketball conferences and 365 conference members for the 2026 to 27 season. Realignment moved 27 programs on July 1, 2026, led by the rebuilt Pac-12, which returns as a nine team league with Gonzaga and five former Mountain West schools. The WAC became the United Athletic Conference, the MAAC renamed itself the Metro Conference, and the five major conferences, the ACC, Big Ten, SEC, Big 12 and Big East, did not change. Coming in 2027 to 28
The WCC adds UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara from the Big West, and Fairfield moves from the Metro Conference to the Coastal Athletic Association. Programs still transitioning from Division II, such as West Florida, play full conference schedules but are not eligible for the NCAA Tournament until their transition ends.
