Georgia Football Bowl History: Record, Results and Appearances

Georgia has played 64 postseason games, second only to Alabama, and won 38 of them. Two national championships were won in the last three, and the 2023 Orange Bowl produced the most lopsided score in the history of the major bowls. The last two seasons have both ended in the same building, the Superdome, in the playoff quarterfinals.

The Two Championship Runs

Georgia won the 2021 national title by beating Michigan 34 to 11 in the Orange Bowl semifinal and Alabama 33 to 18 in Indianapolis. The 2022 repeat ran through a 42 to 41 Peach Bowl semifinal against Ohio State, decided when a last second field goal drifted wide, and a 65 to 7 win over TCU in Los Angeles that is the largest margin in any championship game. The 2023 Orange Bowl

A year after the repeat, Georgia missed the playoff, and Florida State, which had been left out despite going unbeaten, arrived in Miami with most of its starters having opted out. The result was 63 to 3, the most lopsided score in the history of the major bowls. It is the game most often cited in arguments about whether teams outside the playoff should be asked to play bowls at all.

Two Years in the Superdome

The last two seasons ended in the same stadium in the same round. Georgia won the SEC in 2024 and 2025, took a first round bye each time, and lost the Sugar Bowl quarterfinal to Notre Dame 23 to 10 and then to Ole Miss 39 to 34. Teams that earned byes in the first two years of the twelve team format have gone 1 and 7 in quarterfinals, and Georgia accounts for two of the seven.

The Sugar Bowl

Georgia has played the Sugar Bowl twelve times, more than any other bowl, and is 5 and 7 there. The 1980 win over Notre Dame clinched a national championship. The 1982 loss to Penn State, with Herschel Walker as the Heisman winner, cost one. The 2018 loss to Texas came a month after the Bulldogs had led Alabama in the SEC championship game with the playoff on the line.
