The Bulldogs have won five straight and eight of the last ten, the longest run of dominance either side has had since Steve Spurrier’s Florida in the 1990s. For the first time since 1994, the 2026 game will not be in Jacksonville.

The Game the Two Schools Can’t Agree On
Georgia counts a 52 to 0 win in Macon in 1904 as the first meeting. Florida does not, on the grounds that the team it fielded that day came from Florida Agricultural College in Lake City, and the University of Florida as it now exists was not established until the following year. Both schools count the 37 to 0 Georgia win in Jacksonville in 1915 as the first official game. The difference is one Georgia victory, and neither side has shown any interest in settling it.
Jacksonville
The game has been played in Jacksonville every year since 1933, apart from 1943, when the war cancelled it, and 1994 and 1995, when the stadium was being rebuilt for the Jaguars and the two schools swapped home games. It is the only major rivalry in the sport played annually at a neutral site with a fully even ticket split, other than Texas and Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl, and the surrounding weekend has been called the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party for decades.
Stadium renovations in Jacksonville move the game to Atlanta in 2026 and Tampa in 2027, before it returns to Jacksonville under contract from 2028 through 2031. It is only the second time since 1933 the game has moved for that reason.
Run Lindsay Run
The 1980 game is the one everyone knows. Georgia, unbeaten and on the way to the national championship, trailed 21 to 20 with 95 seconds left and the ball on its own 8. Buck Belue found Lindsay Scott, who ran 92 yards for the touchdown, and Larry Munson’s radio call, “Run, Lindsay, run,” became the most famous piece of audio in the program’s history. Georgia won 26 to 21 and finished 12 and 0.
The Spurrier Years
Florida won 11 of 12 between 1990 and 2001 under Steve Spurrier, the most one sided stretch in the series, and won the 1995 game 52 to 17 in Athens, the only Florida win in five visits to Sanford Stadium. Spurrier’s teams treated the game as a formality and said so, which is much of the reason it still matters to Georgia.
The Even Decade
Between 2008 and 2019 the series went in three game blocks: three Florida wins, three Georgia, three Florida, three Georgia. Twelve years split six and six is the most evenly balanced stretch in the rivalry’s history, and it ended when Kirby Smart’s programme pulled away.
The Smart Era
Smart is 8 and 2 against Florida, and the 2020 loss was the last time the Gators won. Georgia followed that defeat with a 42 game regular season winning streak, a school record, and has won five straight in the series by margins that have mostly not been close. The 2025 game, a 24 to 20 win, was the tightest of the five.
Home Games
The game has been played on campus only seven times. Georgia is 4 and 1 in Athens, Florida 1 and 1 in Gainesville. The 1994 game in Gainesville was the last time Florida hosted; the 1995 game in Athens was the last at Sanford Stadium. Our Sanford Stadium page covers the venue.
