How MLB Lineups Work
Teams post their starting lineups about one to two hours before first pitch, and this page picks them up automatically: the starting pitcher for each side, then the batting order from one to nine with each player’s position. Until a lineup is posted, the game shows a notice in its place. Every game on today’s schedule is listed in order of first pitch, in Eastern time.
| Spot | Typical role |
|---|---|
| 1 and 2 | High on base hitters who see the most plate appearances |
| 3 and 4 | The best power bats; the cleanup hitter bats fourth |
| 5 and 6 | Run producers who protect the heart of the order |
| 7 through 9 | Weaker hitters, often defense first catchers and shortstops |
A lineup spot is worth roughly a dozen or more plate appearances over a full season for each step up the order, which is why managers put their best hitters near the top.
