The date that governs who can play in October is 11:59 p.m. ET on August 31. It is one of the most misunderstood deadlines in baseball, because it does not do what its name suggests.
It is not a deadline for setting a playoff roster. It is a deadline for being in the organisation at all.
What It Actually Requires
To appear on any postseason roster, a player must have been in his club’s organisation — on the active roster, an injured list, the bereavement list, the restricted list, or in the minor leagues — as of that moment.
He does not need to be in the major leagues. A player at Double-A on August 31 who is promoted three weeks later remains eligible. What he cannot be is someone who joined the club in September.
Why It Exists
Without it, a contender could sign free agents in September purely to stack a postseason roster. The deadline forces clubs to commit to their group before the final month, so October is played with the team you built rather than the team you assembled at the last minute.
It also sits a day before roster expansion, which is why the two get conflated. Anyone promoted on September 1 was necessarily in the organisation the night before, so the entire expansion class is eligible automatically.
The Injury Exception
One route around it exists. If a player on a postseason roster is injured, the club may petition the Commissioner’s Office for a replacement who did not meet the August 31 requirement.
The substitution must be like for like — a pitcher replaces a pitcher, a position player replaces a position player. The injured player is then barred from that round, and depending on timing, from the round after it.
The Deadlines That Come Later
Setting the actual roster is a separate exercise that happens four times.

Clubs can change personnel between rounds freely, provided everyone named cleared the August 31 requirement. A pitcher left off a wild card roster can appear in the division series; a bench bat used in one round can be swapped for an extra arm in the next.
Why Teams Care in August
This deadline is the reason the trade deadline is not the last word on roster building. A club can still claim a player on waivers or sign a free agent in the final days of August and have him eligible for October — provided the paperwork clears before midnight on the 31st.
