NFL Transactions Today: Claims, Cuts and Signings

The busiest transaction day of the NFL calendar. Waiver claims were awarded at 1 p.m. ET, practice squads must be filed by 6 p.m., and every claim forces a corresponding release — so the roster churn runs all afternoon.

Twenty-nine players were claimed in total by 14 clubs. Detroit claimed nobody. Philadelphia lost four players, more than any other team.

Cleared Waivers

Everyone who passed through all 32 teams is now an unrestricted free agent. The notable names: QB Will Levis (Titans), OT Jedrick Wills (Bears), OL Evan Neal, DT Mazi Smith (Jets), QB Hendon Hooker (Titans), and Dolphins quarterbacks Mark Gronowski and Cam Miller.

  • Jaguars — 15 additions, including QB Joey Aguilar
  • Patriots — RB Hassan Haskins, P Mitch Wishnowsky
  • Saints — TE Stone Smartt
  • Raiders — LB Cameron McGrone

Also of Note

Aaron Donald has come out of retirement to rejoin the Rams on a one-year deal worth up to $30 million, ending a two-and-a-half-year absence. He will debut in Melbourne on September 10.

Sam Howell will be Dallas’s backup quarterback, with Joe Milton waived.

1,184 players were released over cutdown weekend, the first time in 22 years the NFL held final cuts on a Sunday.

What’s Next

Practice squads close at 6 p.m. ET today. From Tuesday the market moves to free agency, where cleared players and vested veterans can sign anywhere. Week 1 opens Wednesday, September 9 with New England at Seattle.
