The 47 Game Streak
Oklahoma did not lose between October 10, 1953 and November 16, 1957, a span of 47 games that included two national championships and four conference titles. It ended with a 7 to 0 home loss to Notre Dame, a result so unexpected that Sports Illustrated had a cover story on the streak already printed. No major college program has come within a dozen games of it since.

The Winningest Program Since 1945
Oklahoma’s claim to be the most successful program of the modern era rests on its record since the end of the Second World War, when Jim Tatum and then Bud Wilkinson arrived. From 1946 through the Stoops years the Sooners won at a rate above .760, the best of any program across that span, and the program has recorded more ten win seasons than anyone. Its all time percentage is lower because of the first fifty years, when Bennie Owen’s teams were good and everyone else’s were not.
The Losing Seasons
Oklahoma has had very few. Between 1966 and 1997 the program had one losing season, and the three under John Blake from 1996 to 1998 are remembered as the low point that brought Bob Stoops in. Stoops never had one in eighteen years. Brent Venables has had two in four, in 2022 and in the first SEC season of 2024, both 6 and 7.
The SEC Years
Oklahoma went 2 and 6 in SEC play in 2024 and 6 and 2 in 2025, reaching the playoff as an at large before losing 34 to 24 at Alabama in the first round. The 2025 team’s ten wins were built on a defence that finished in the top ten nationally, and the offence under new coordinator Ben Arbuckle and quarterback John Mateer was the question.
