The Stoops Era
Bob Stoops went 10 and 8 against Texas across eighteen seasons, but the shape of that record is what mattered: five straight wins from 2000 to 2004, including 63 to 14 in 2000 and 65 to 13 in 2003, the two most lopsided results in the series’ history, and both on the way to a BCS championship game. Mack Brown’s Texas won only two Big 12 titles in sixteen years and Oklahoma’s eight in the same stretch are the main reason Brown’s tenure ended when it did. The Cotton Bowl
The game has been played at the Texas State Fair in Dallas since 1932, with the stadium divided at the 50 yard line between crimson and burnt orange. Oklahoma has argued at various points that Dallas is not neutral, given that it sits three hours from Norman and in the other school’s state, but the arrangement has outlasted every conference realignment including the joint move to the SEC in 2024. The winner takes the Golden Hat.
2008: The Tiebreaker
Texas beat top ranked Oklahoma 45 to 35 in the highest scoring game in the series, and Oklahoma then won the Big 12 South on a tiebreaker anyway, went to the Big 12 title game and the BCS championship, and Sam Bradford beat Colt McCoy for the Heisman. 2018: Twice
Texas won the October game 48 to 45 after Kyler Murray brought Oklahoma back from 21 down, then the Sooners won the rematch 39 to 27 in the Big 12 championship game in Arlington, the only time the rivalry has been played anywhere but the Cotton Bowl since 1932. Murray won the Heisman and Oklahoma went to the playoff.
The 2025 Loss
Oklahoma arrived ranked sixth at 5 and 1 and left without a touchdown. John Mateer, in his first game back from hand surgery, threw three interceptions, Ryan Niblett returned a punt 75 yards for Texas, and the 23 to 6 result was the first time Texas had held a top ten opponent without a touchdown since 1979. It was the second straight loss in the series after a 34 to 3 defeat in 2024, Oklahoma’s first two Red River games as an SEC member.
The Games That Defined It From Norman
1956. Oklahoma won 45 to 0 in the middle of the 47 game winning streak, still the largest shutout margin in the series.
1971. Oklahoma won 48 to 27 in the first year of the wishbone and went on to the Game of the Century against Nebraska.
2000. Ranked tenth, Oklahoma beat No. 11 Texas 63 to 14 and did not lose again on the way to the national championship.
2003. Jason White’s Heisman season produced a 65 to 13 result that Texas has never forgotten.
