Oregon has never won a national championship, but it has played for two, after the 2010 and 2014 seasons, and reached a playoff semifinal after 2025. The modern program traces back to Rich Brooks, whose 1994 team reached the Rose Bowl, and Mike Bellotti, who won more games than anyone in school history. Chip Kelly made Oregon a national power, and Dan Lanning has gone 48 and 8 in four seasons with back to back 13 win years.

Records are wins, losses and ties. Gold rows are coaches who won a conference title. Taggart left for Florida State before the 2017 bowl game, which Cristobal coached. Interim Bryan McClendon coached the 2021 Alamo Bowl after Cristobal left for Miami. Len Casanova (1951 to 1966) is the other long tenured coach in program history.
Rich Brooks, 1977 to 1994
Brooks took over a program that had not been to a bowl since 1963 and stayed 18 seasons, the longest tenure in school history. His early teams struggled, but his 1994 team won the Pac-10 and played Penn State in the Rose Bowl, Oregon’s first appearance there in 37 years. He left for the NFL’s St. Louis Rams after that season.
Mike Bellotti, 1995 to 2008
Bellotti, Brooks’s offensive coordinator, won 116 games, the most of any Oregon coach, and made the Ducks a regular bowl team. His 2001 team won the Fiesta Bowl and finished second in the AP poll, the program’s best finish at the time. He moved into the athletic director’s office after the 2008 season.
Chip Kelly and Mark Helfrich
Kelly, hired from New Hampshire as offensive coordinator in 2007, took over in 2009 and went 46 and 7 with a fast paced spread offense that much of the sport later copied. He won three straight conference titles and took the unbeaten 2010 team to the BCS championship game, where it lost to Auburn on a last second field goal. He left for the Philadelphia Eagles after the 2012 season. His offensive coordinator, Mark Helfrich, followed and led the 2014 team, with Heisman winner Marcus Mariota, to the first College Football Playoff title game, a loss to Ohio State. Helfrich was fired after a 4 and 8 season in 2016.
Taggart and Cristobal
Willie Taggart lasted one season before leaving for Florida State. His co offensive coordinator, Mario Cristobal, was promoted and won Pac-12 titles in 2019 and 2020, then left for Miami, his alma mater, in December 2021.
Dan Lanning, 2022 to present
Lanning was Kirby Smart’s defensive coordinator at Georgia, fresh off the 2021 national championship, when Oregon hired him. He went 10 and 3 and 12 and 2 in the final two Pac-12 seasons, then led Oregon into the Big Ten in 2024 with a 13 and 0 regular season and the conference championship, beating Penn State. That team lost to eventual champion Ohio State in the Rose Bowl quarterfinal. In 2025 the Ducks went 13 and 2, won the first playoff game ever played at Autzen Stadium and the Orange Bowl, and lost to Indiana in the semifinal. It was the first time Oregon won 13 games in back to back seasons. Our 2026 schedule page has the current slate.
The Bottom Line
Mike Bellotti won the most games in Oregon history, Chip Kelly won at the highest rate, and Kelly and Mark Helfrich each took the Ducks to a national title game. Dan Lanning has the program’s first Big Ten title and a 48 and 8 record through four seasons. See the coaches with the most wins, Oregon stats and the Oregon score today.
