Six New Coaches in 36 Hours
Nearly 40 percent of the league changed leadership inside a day and a half after the 2025 regular season ended. Auburn hired Alex Golesh, Florida hired Jon Sumrall, Arkansas hired Ryan Silverfield, Ole Miss promoted Pete Golding, Kentucky hired Will Stein and LSU landed Lane Kiffin.
Kiffin’s move was the messy one. He left Oxford after an 11-1 season and drove to Baton Rouge, becoming the first person ever to coach at three different SEC schools. Ole Miss replaced him with Golding, his own defensive coordinator, and the two meet in Week 3 with quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy still in Rebel uniforms.
When Each School Joined
- 1932, charter members: Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
- 1991: Arkansas and South Carolina, who began conference play in 1992, the same year the league split into divisions and launched the championship game.
- 2012: Missouri and Texas A&M.
- 2024: Oklahoma and Texas, which took the league to sixteen and eventually killed the divisions.
How the League Is Structured Now
There are no divisions. The SEC dropped them after the 2023 season and runs one sixteen team standings table, with the top two by winning percentage meeting in Atlanta for the title.
2026 is also the first year of the nine game conference schedule. Each team has three annual opponents to protect the rivalries and six that rotate, which means every school now plays every other school at least once every two years and home and away inside four. Every team also has to schedule at least one non-conference opponent from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 or Notre Dame.
