Tulane Is Not the Underdog You’d Assume
The Green Wave have spent several years as the standard-bearer for Group of Five football, winning a New Year’s Six bowl and consistently ranking. They are one of two non-power programs to have reached the College Football Playoff in recent years.
Duke is the ACC team here, but the gap in recent results is narrow — and may run the other way.
Duke’s Position
Duke has built a competitive ACC program without the recruiting base of the conference’s traditional powers. Their season includes a trip to Georgia Tech on October 10 and a visit from Vanderbilt’s conference-mates through the ACC schedule.
Opening against Tulane is a genuine test rather than a warm-up.

Tulane’s talent is real, but a first game under a new staff at Wallace Wade is a hard spot.
