Virginia Tech opens at Lane Stadium against VMI, a fellow Virginia institution located about 70 miles away in Lexington. It is one of the shortest road trips of the weekend and among the oldest regional pairings in the state.

Enter Sandman
Lane Stadium’s entrance — the crowd jumping in unison to Metallica’s Enter Sandman as the team takes the field — is among the most recognisable traditions in the sport, and it works best at night.
For a September opener under the lights, it is the whole reason to tune in early.
Two Virginia Institutions
VMI is a military college in Lexington with an enrolment under 2,000, playing in the Southern Conference at the FCS level. Virginia Tech began life as a land-grant military institute too, and the Corps of Cadets still marches at home games.
The shared history gives this more texture than a typical FBS-FCS opener.
How to Watch
ACC Network is cable-only. Fubo, YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV and DirecTV Stream all carry it, and the ESPN App streams it for authenticated subscribers. Sling does not include ACC Network on all packages, so check first.
The 7:30 window is busy: Clemson at LSU on ABC, Western Michigan at Michigan on NBC, and UL Monroe at Mississippi State on ESPNU.
The Bottom Line
VMI at Virginia Tech kicks off 7:30 p.m. ET Saturday, September 5 on ACC Network from Lane Stadium. A 70-mile trip between two Virginia schools with shared military heritage, and Enter Sandman under the lights.
