The Lead Change
Arizona and San Diego have been effectively inseparable for weeks. As recently as Saturday the Padres held the final wild card by four ten-thousandths of a percentage point — .5294 to .5290 — despite Arizona owning more wins.
Sunday settled it, at least for now. The Diamondbacks sit at 73-65 and the Padres at 72-65, a half-game gap that puts Arizona in the playoff field and San Diego first out. The wrinkle is games remaining: Arizona has 24 left, San Diego 25, so the Padres have one extra chance to make it up.

Los Angeles Has the Shortest Path Left
The Dodgers’ magic number of 16 is the lowest in baseball, smaller even than Milwaukee’s 18 despite the Brewers holding a better record. That’s a function of who’s chasing: Los Angeles is being pursued by a 73-65 team, while Milwaukee has a 77-60 club behind it.
Los Angeles is also three games behind Milwaukee for the National League’s best record and the first-round bye that comes with it, tied with Atlanta at 82-55.
The Bottom Two
San Francisco at 56-81 and Colorado at 52-85 are 26 and 30 games out. The Rockies are tied with the Angels for the worst record in baseball.
