The Path to Sunday

The final four is set. The United States beat Hungary 108-56 in Thursday’s opening quarterfinal, the highest scoring quarterfinal in World Cup history, and plays Spain, an 89-66 winner over Australia, in the second semifinal Saturday at 2 p.m. ET on TBS. France beat China 90-61 and meets host Germany, which upset Belgium 93-74, in the first semifinal at 10:30 a.m. ET.

The semifinals are today, Saturday, September 12: France vs. Germany at 10:30 a.m. ET on TBS and truTV, then the United States vs. Spain at 2 p.m. ET on TBS, both streaming on HBO Max. The two winners meet Sunday afternoon and the finalists will be named here as soon as both games end. The United States and France sit on opposite halves of the bracket, so the only place they can meet is the final, which would be a rematch of the one point Paris Olympic gold medal game.

What the Winner Gets

Beyond the trophy, the world champion earns direct qualification for the women’s basketball tournament at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. That prize does not apply to the Americans, who already have a place as hosts, so every other contender has an extra reason to reach Sunday.

The Streak in the Background

The United States is pursuing a fifth straight World Cup title and a 12th overall. The Americans entered this tournament on a 66 game winning streak spanning World Cup and Olympic play, going back to a semifinal loss to Russia in 2006.

They are doing it without A'ja Wilson, with Breanna Stewart leading a roster that includes six players making their World Cup debuts.

The Bottom Line

Sunday, September 13, 2 p.m. ET, Berlin Arena, on TNT and truTV with HBO Max streaming. The third place game tips at 10:30 a.m. ET the same morning.
