The Semifinal: USA 76, Spain 66
The closest call of the tournament. Spain led by eight early, the largest deficit the Americans have faced in Berlin, and the game was tied at 58 entering the fourth quarter before the United States closed on an 18 to 8 run with a single turnover in the period. The Americans shot 3 of 18 from three and 39.7 percent overall and won it at the free throw line, 27 of 35 against Spain’s 10 of 11.
Breanna Stewart had 16 points and six rebounds and went 8 of 11 from the line by herself. Kahleah Copper scored 13, her best game of the tournament, and Jackie Young had 12, six of them in the fourth quarter. María Conde and Iyana Martín scored 17 each for Spain; Martín, at 20, became the youngest player to score 16 or more in a World Cup semifinal. Caitlin Clark had one point in 17 minutes, and Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen did not play.
It was the 35th straight World Cup win for the United States, a streak that began after the 2006 semifinals, and put the Americans in a fifth consecutive final.
The Quarterfinal: USA 108, Hungary 56
The Americans produced the highest scoring quarterfinal in World Cup history Thursday. They shot 60 percent from the field and 12 of 22 from three, and their 31 assists were the most ever in a World Cup quarterfinal. Napheesa Collier was Player of the Game with 19 points. Rhyne Howard scored 15, and Kahleah Copper, Caitlin Clark and Jackie Young had 10 each, with Clark adding 9 assists in 20 minutes. Réka Lelik led Hungary with 12.
The Group Stage
The opener against China was the version everyone expected, a 94-61 win with the ball moving. Then Italy nearly took them down. The Americans won 55-52 while shooting 1 of 12 from three and scoring their fewest points in a World Cup game since 1984.
The response was emphatic. Against Czechia they scored 105, all 12 players scored, and seven different players made a three. Breanna Stewart was Player of the Game with 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists in 17 minutes. Angel Reese added 13, Napheesa Collier and Jackie Young 12 each, Paige Bueckers and Sonia Citron 10 apiece, and Caitlin Clark had 9 points and 7 assists.
Today’s Final: France, Sunday at 2 p.m. ET on TNT
The United States plays France for gold today, Sunday, September 13 at 2 p.m. ET on TNT and HBO Max, a rematch of the 2024 Paris Olympic final that the Americans won 67-66 when Gabby Williams’ buzzer beater was ruled a two rather than a three. France beat host Germany 86-64 in Saturday’s early semifinal and is in its first World Cup final ever, already assured of its first World Cup medal. Williams had 22 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals against Germany, France forced 25 turnovers and scored 29 points off them, and a 9 to 0 run to open the second half broke the game open. Marine Johannès and Janelle Salaün are the other names to know. France went 4-0 in Group B and beat China 90-61 in the quarterfinals.
A win would give the United States a fifth straight world title and a 12th overall. The champion also earns direct qualification for the LA28 Olympics, which the Americans already have as hosts.
