How the Timeline Works
Teams that are out of the playoffs usually interview candidates in October and hire by early November, before the general managers’ meetings and the Winter Meetings. Clubs still playing wait until they are eliminated, which is why Philadelphia’s decision on Mattingly comes after the postseason. Interim managers who win are often given the job; those who do not typically return to a coaching role or move on.
