Series History
These teams have met once, and it was the same kind of game: Ole Miss beat Louisville 43 to 24 in the 2021 Chick-fil-A Kickoff in Atlanta, a neutral site season opener. Ole Miss has played at Nissan Stadium three times before, beating Georgia Tech in the 2013 Music City Bowl and Vanderbilt there in 2014, and losing the 2000 Music City Bowl to West Virginia. This is the final season for the current Nissan Stadium.
What to Watch
Pete Golding’s first full season. Ole Miss went 13 and 2 last year, 7 and 1 in the SEC, and reached the College Football Playoff semifinal before losing to Miami in the Fiesta Bowl. Lane Kiffin left for LSU in late November, defensive coordinator Golding took over for the playoff and got the job permanently. He is 3 and 0 as a head coach and his teams averaged 35.6 points in that stretch.
The players Kiffin could not take. Kiffin tried to bring quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy with him to Baton Rouge. Golding kept both. Chambliss is a Heisman contender at +1600 and this is his first appearance of the season; the full board is on Heisman odds.
Louisville’s edge rush. Jeff Brohm’s defense can create pressure off the edge, which is the one thing that has bothered Chambliss. The Cardinals also return running back Isaac Brown and receiver Tre Richardson, so the over at 55.5 has support on both sides.
Prediction
Ole Miss 34, Louisville 27. This is the most competitive game of the weekend and the number is right around a touchdown for a reason: Louisville can score, and season openers with a new starting quarterback on one sideline are unpredictable. But Ole Miss returns the better roster from a playoff semifinalist, and Golding kept the two players who make the offense work. Rebels win, Louisville covers, and the total goes over.
