Why These Games Matter More Now
With the regular season inside its final week, every result changes something. A magic number is the combined total of leader wins and chaser losses needed to end a race, so a single afternoon can move it by two when both games break the same way. The Magic column in the tables above carries that figure for every club and updates automatically.
The loss column is the one to watch rather than the win column. A team with games in hand has not banked anything, and in the final week the chaser simply runs out of chances regardless of how well it plays.
Where the Races Stand
Division winners get a first round bye. Wild card teams open with a best of three series, often on the road against an opponent that has had days to set its rotation, which is why teams keep chasing a division long after a playoff place looks secure.
