What to Watch
Nashville’s season is the outlier: three defeats in 24 matches in a league built to prevent exactly that. The Supporters’ Shield lead is seven over Vancouver with the regular season winding down.
Both conference races below the top are crowded. In the East, New England, Chicago and Charlotte are separated by a single point for third through fifth. In the West, LAFC and Dallas are level on 40 and San Jose and St. Louis are level on 38, with the ninth and final playoff place held by San Diego on 30, a point clear of a three-way logjam on 29.
The bottom of the table has its own story. Sporting Kansas City at 15 points and the LA Galaxy sitting 12th in the West are the two names nobody expected to find down there.
How the Playoffs Work
Nine clubs from each conference qualify. Seeds eight and nine meet in a wild card match, then the first round is best of three, and the conference semifinals and finals are single elimination before MLS Cup.
