Why the Points Look Strange
When the playoffs begin, all 16 qualifiers are reset to 2,000 points plus five for each regular season win and additional bonuses for stage points. That is why the top 16 are packed within 100 points of each other while 17th place sits at 605. Comparing a playoff driver’s total to a non playoff driver’s tells you nothing.
The Anomaly
Shane Van Gisbergen has two wins and did not make the playoffs, which happens when victories come on road courses and consistency does not follow. Christopher Bell and Kyle Larson are the reverse: no wins, but sixth and seventh on points.
