How NFL Trades Work
Trades can involve players, draft picks and salary cap relief, and every traded player must pass a physical with his new team before the deal is official. A team acquiring a player takes on the remaining prorated salary for the season; the team trading him away carries any remaining guaranteed money and signing bonus proration as dead money against its cap. Players with no trade clauses must waive them, and picks can be traded up to two drafts out. In season, teams also need roster room, so most trades come with a corresponding cut or waiver claim.
