Why Practice Squads Matter More Than Ever
The 16-man squad era (expanded from 10 during the pandemic and made permanent) quietly created a second roster. With two weekly elevations, six unrestricted veteran slots, and protection rules, coaches treat the squad as gameday inventory rather than a developmental redshirt — a third of most teams’ special-teams snaps in September come from elevated players. For the players, it’s a $233,750 season at the standard rate with a real path up: dozens of squad players are signed to active rosters every month, often by other teams.
