How to Read the Scoreboard

What Is at Stake
This is the first Super Bowl rematch to open a season since Carolina and Denver in 2016, and only the second in the 25 year history of the Kickoff Game. Seattle beat New England 29-13 in Super Bowl LX in February, holding Drake Maye and the Patriots offense without a touchdown until the fourth quarter and sacking Maye six times. The Seahawks have won four straight against New England and 10 of the last 13 meetings.
New England went 14-3 in Mike Vrabel’s first season and added A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs to give Maye a real receiving corps. Seattle led the NFL in scoring defense at 17.2 points per game last season but lost Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III, Riq Woolen, Boye Mafe and Coby Bryant in free agency, and offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak left to coach the Raiders. Brian Fleury calls plays for the first time.
Who Is Out
Seattle is without starting nickel safety Nick Emmanwori, safety Ty Okada and receiver Tory Horton. Running back Zach Charbonnet remains on the PUP list, so rookie first round pick Jadarian Price and George Holani carry the ball. New England is without running back TreVeyon Henderson and lineman Ben Brown. Rhamondre Stevenson starts at running back with practice squad call up Lan Larison behind him. Three Things to Watch
Maye against the Seattle pass rush. Six sacks in the Super Bowl. Seattle recorded 47 sacks in 2025 and Maye took 47. If Will Campbell and Morgan Moses hold up on the edges, the Patriots offense looks nothing like it did in February.
Christian Gonzalez on Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Gonzalez signed a four year, $135 million extension Tuesday that made him the highest paid cornerback in NFL history. Smith-Njigba is the best receiver he will see all year.
Seattle’s secondary without Emmanwori. Two of the three safeties Seattle planned to lean on are out, and the backups are a fresh signing and a practice squad elevation. That is where Brown and Doubs get their chances.
