Houston leads the AL West at 69-68. That’s a game above .500 — the narrowest lead of any first-place team in baseball, and Texas sits two back with Seattle five behind. Whoever wins this thing may do it with 84 or 85 victories.

The Wild Card Angle
Texas is the team with two paths. The Rangers are two games out of the division and also two games out of the American League’s third wild card, currently held by Cleveland at 69-68. Seattle is five back in the division and four out of the wild card.
Houston, by leading, is effectively playing for the division only — barely above .500, the Astros would be outside the wild card picture if they slipped to second.

The Bottom Two Are Playing for Draft Position
The Athletics at 53-84 and the Angels at 52-85 own two of the worst records in baseball, 16 and 17 games out with 25 to play. Both are mathematically finished in any practical sense.
They still matter to the race, though. Houston, Texas and Seattle all have remaining games against them, and in a division likely to be decided by two or three wins, who beats up on the bottom becomes the whole story. Contenders from other divisions have already been helping themselves at the AL West’s expense. For the full league picture see our MLB standings page.
The Bottom Line
Houston leads at 69-68 with a magic number of 24 and 25 games left. Texas is two back and also two out of the last wild card, giving the Rangers the clearest dual path. Seattle needs to make up five in a month. This remains the only division in baseball where the leader is barely above .500.
