How the 12 Team Field Works
The five highest ranked conference champions get automatic bids and the seven highest ranked remaining teams fill the field, with the top four seeds earning first round byes. That is why a team can sit at 80 percent to make the field while being 15 percent to win it all: making the playoff is mostly about avoiding a second loss, winning it is about beating three or four top 10 teams in a row. The title market is on national championship odds.
