The US Open has been open to professionals since 1968, and 58 tournaments have been played in that time at Forest Hills and then Flushing Meadows. Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer share the Open era men’s record with five titles each; Chris Evert and Serena Williams share the women’s with six. Every champion is below, most recent first.

Most Titles in the Open Era

Men: Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer, five each. Connors won on three different surfaces, because the tournament changed from grass to clay to hard court during his career, which is a record nobody can break. Pete Sampras won five as well. Novak Djokovic has four, Rafael Nadal four.

Women: Chris Evert and Serena Williams, six each. Evert won four in a row from 1975 to 1978. Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf won four apiece, and Graf’s came across nine years.

The Surface Changed Twice

The US Open was played on grass at Forest Hills through 1974, on clay from 1975 to 1977, and on hard courts since the move to Flushing Meadows in 1978. It is the only major to have been contested on three surfaces, which is why comparing eras here is harder than at the other three.
