The Mets joined the National League as an expansion team in 1962 and lost 120 games in their first season, still one of the worst records in baseball history. Seven years later they won the World Series. Across 64 seasons they are 4,899-5,227 with five pennants and two championships, in 1969 and 1986. Every season is below.

The Worst Start in Modern Baseball
Casey Stengel’s first Mets team went 40-120, and the club lost at least 109 games in each of its first four seasons. Only the 2024 White Sox have lost more games in a season than the 1962 Mets.
1969 and 1986
The Miracle Mets won 100 games in 1969 behind Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman, swept Atlanta in the first NLCS and beat a Baltimore team that had won 109 games. The 1973 club won the division at 82-79 and pushed Oakland to seven games in the World Series. The 1986 team is the best in franchise history at 108-54, and it survived Game 6 against Boston after being one out from elimination.
The Near Misses
The 1988 team won 100 games and lost the NLCS. The 1999 and 2000 clubs went to the postseason in back to back years and lost the Subway Series to the Yankees. Then came the September collapses of 2007 and 2008, both ending on the final day. The 2015 team reached the World Series behind a young rotation of Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey and Noah Syndergaard and lost in five to Kansas City.
The Cohen Era
Steve Cohen bought the team in 2020 and payroll has been at or near the top of baseball since. The 2022 club won 101 games and still finished second, losing the division on a head to head tiebreaker with Atlanta. The 2024 team came out of the third wild card spot and reached the NLCS, and the 2025 team went 83-79 and missed the postseason.
