His First Career Start
September 21, 2024 against Louisiana-Monroe. Manning threw an interception on the opening drive and finished 15 of 29 for 258 yards with two touchdowns and two picks in a 51-3 Texas win. Steve Sarkisian said afterward that the way Manning handled the negative plays showed how much he had grown in a year.
The Losses
All three of Manning’s losses as a starter came in 2025. The one people point to is the season opener at Ohio State on August 30, a 14-7 Texas loss in Columbus in which Manning went 17 of 30 for 170 yards and a touchdown and added 10 carries for 38 yards. He faces the Buckeyes again Saturday night in Austin.
The 2025 Split That Explains the Record
Manning’s first season as the full-time starter divides almost cleanly in two. Over his first five games he was 81 of 135 for 1,151 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. Over the final eight he was 167 of 269 for 2,012 yards with 15 touchdowns and two interceptions, and Texas went 7-1 in that stretch. He finished 17th in ESPN’s QBR and 14th in PFF’s grading among FBS quarterbacks, while playing through a nagging foot injury.
His best single game of that season came against San Jose State on September 6: 19 of 30 for 295 yards and four touchdowns, plus a 20-yard rushing score, including an 83-yard touchdown to Parker Livingstone that was the 13th-longest play in program history.
How 2026 Started
Manning opened his senior year 20 of 27 for 305 yards and four touchdowns against Texas State, a 74 percent completion rate and a 210.4 passer rating in a 59-7 win. It was the inverse of how 2025 began, and it is why the Ohio State rematch carries so much weight for his Heisman case.
