Career Context
Manning redshirted in 2023 behind Quinn Ewers, played spot duty in 10 games with two starts in 2024 while Ewers was hurt, and started all 13 games in 2025 as the full-time starter. He is 13-3 in 16 career starts.
The 2025 Split
His first season as the full-time starter divides in two. Over the first five games he was 81 of 135 for 1,151 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. Over the final eight he was 167 of 269 for 2,012 yards with 15 touchdowns and two interceptions, and Texas went 7-1. He finished 17th in ESPN’s QBR and 14th in PFF’s grading, playing through a nagging foot injury for much of it.
Week 1: Texas State
Manning threw touchdowns to Cam Coleman on the opening drive (6 yards), Ryan Wingo on the next one, and Coleman and Hollywood Smothers in the second half, and came out with Texas leading 42 to 7 in the third quarter. He was 7 for 8 on third down. Wingo caught seven passes for 121 yards, all before halftime; Coleman had three for 70 in his Texas debut after transferring from Auburn. The one blemish was an interception in the end zone on the last play of the first half, a throw into triple coverage. Steve Sarkisian’s postgame concern was the run game, not the quarterback: after a 45 yard Smothers run on the first play Texas managed 111 rushing yards the rest of the way.
The Ohio State Win
Texas beat No. 1 Ohio State 24-23 on September 12, rallying from 23-3 down entering the fourth quarter. Manning went 23 of 37 for 196 yards with a touchdown and an interception, including 8 of 11 in the fourth. Full detail on his numbers against Ohio State.
The Backstory
Texas had lost its previous two meetings with Ohio State, including a 14-7 defeat in Columbus to open 2025 in which Manning went 17 of 30 for 170 yards. Saturday’s win ended that.
