Two of the three American League wild cards are close to settled. The third is a four-team scramble inside two games, and it may not resolve until the final weekend.
Cleveland holds it at 69-68. Baltimore is one back, Toronto 1.5, Texas two.

Division leaders Tampa Bay (82-54), Chicago (72-64) and Houston (69-68) are excluded — they qualify automatically if they hold their leads. Games back is measured from the third wild card.
The Third Spot Is the Whole Race
New York at 78-59 and Boston at 74-63 are effectively safe; the Red Sox hold a 4.5-game cushion over the cut line with 25 to play. Everything interesting happens below them.
Cleveland, Baltimore, Toronto and Texas are separated by two games, and not one of them has a winning record. Whoever emerges will likely qualify at or barely above .500 — a reminder that the third wild card is less a reward for excellence than a door left open.
Cleveland Is Playing Two Races
The Guardians are the only club in this group with a second route. At 69-68 they hold the wild card and sit 3.5 games behind the White Sox in the AL Central, so a good fortnight could win them a division rather than a coin-flip series.
Texas has a version of the same thing, two games out of the AL West as well as two out of the wild card. Baltimore and Toronto have no such luxury — Tampa Bay is 14.5 and 15 ahead of them respectively, so the wild card is their only path.
What Winning the Division Is Worth
The seeding rules make this stark. Division winners take the top three seeds regardless of record, so New York at 78-59 would be the fourth seed and travel, while Houston at 69-68 would be the third seed and host.
Chicago at 72-64 would collect a first-round bye. The Yankees, six games better, would play a best-of-three on the road. That is the single strongest incentive in the sport to win a division rather than settle for a wild card — and why New York’s 4.5-game deficit to Tampa Bay matters more than the comfortable wild card position suggests.

The Bottom Line
The Yankees and Red Sox hold the first two American League wild cards with room to spare. Cleveland has the third at 69-68, one game ahead of Baltimore, 1.5 ahead of Toronto and two ahead of Texas. None of the four chasers is above .500, and the Guardians and Rangers are each still alive in their divisions as well.
