The Game of the Week: LSU at Ole Miss
No. 7 LSU plays at No. 8 Ole Miss on Saturday, September 19 at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC (full breakdown on our LSU vs. Ole Miss page), and the storyline needs no help: Lane Kiffin walks back into Vaught-Hemingway as the opposing head coach for the first time since leaving Ole Miss for LSU in January. Both teams are unbeaten. LSU opened with a 51 to 10 dismantling of Clemson behind Sam Leavitt, then beat Louisiana Tech 45 to 14. Ole Miss, now coached by Pete Golding, beat Louisville 41 to 38 with Trinidad Chambliss throwing for 336 yards, then handled Charlotte 41 to 9. Kiffin recruited most of the roster he is about to coach against. The market has it inside a field goal.
The Rest of the Marquee Slate
Michigan State at Notre Dame. Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC. No. 3 Notre Dame is 2 and 0 and has not been threatened, beating Wisconsin 41 to 13 at Lambeau Field and Rice 52 to 0. Florida State at Alabama. Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC. No. 10 Alabama is 2 and 0 and untested; Florida State is coming off a 27 to 24 loss to SMU that cost the Seminoles their ranking. Details on Florida State vs. Alabama.
Georgia at Arkansas opens the noon window on ABC, No. 2 Georgia having outscored two overmatched opponents 133 to 23 while Arkansas was beaten 43 to 10 at Utah. Houston at Texas Tech on Friday at 8 on FOX is the ranked Big 12 game, No. 22 against No. 13, and both beat Oregon State by a similar margin. Miami at Wake Forest Friday at 7:30 on ESPN sends No. 5 Miami into its first real road environment. SMU at Louisville at 3:30 is the weekend’s oddity: Louisville is favored despite sitting seven spots lower in the poll.
UTSA at Texas at 8 p.m. is Texas’ first game as the No. 1 team after rallying from 23 to 3 down to beat Ohio State 24 to 23 in Columbus. It is a SEC Network+ streaming exclusive with no traditional TV window.
Thursday and Friday
Week 3 opens Thursday, September 17 with Syracuse at Pitt at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN, a Big East era rivalry with Pitt at 3 and 0 behind a defense that held UCF to seven points. Friday, September 18 carries three games: Miami at Wake Forest and Houston at Texas Tech at 7:30 and 8, then Portland State at Oregon at 10:30 on Big Ten Network.
