How Both Teams Got Here
LSU is unbeaten and has looked the part. Kiffin’s first team in Baton Rouge opened with a 51-10 dismantling of Clemson, then handled Louisiana Tech 45-14 in Week 2. Sam Leavitt, the Arizona State transfer who became the centerpiece of the roster, threw for 230 yards and ran for 113 more in the Clemson rout and earned SEC co-offensive player of the week for it.
Ole Miss is also unbeaten under Pete Golding, who took over when Kiffin left. Trinidad Chambliss opened the season with 336 yards and three touchdowns in a 41-38 win over Louisville in Nashville, then the Rebels beat Charlotte 41-9. Chambliss is the 24 year old sixth year senior who went from Division II Ferris State to third in the country in passing yards last season and won a court fight with the NCAA for one more year.
The Kiffin Factor
Kiffin spent five seasons at Ole Miss and left after taking the Rebels to their first College Football Playoff semifinal. He recruited most of the Ole Miss roster he will be coaching against, including Chambliss. Golding was his defensive coordinator. Both staffs know exactly what the other likes to call, which usually produces either a chess match or a shootout and rarely anything in between.
What to Watch
The quarterback matchup is the game. Leavitt is the more athletic runner and LSU has leaned on that; Chambliss is the more accurate deep passer and has the better supporting cast in the run game. Whichever defense forces the other quarterback into obvious passing downs probably wins. Vaught-Hemingway at night with this much history attached will be as loud as any venue in the country.
