The Pitching Matchup
Nolan McLean, Mets. The 25-year-old right-hander has become the Mets’ ace in his first full season: 11-8 with a 3.06 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP and 179 strikeouts in 161.2 innings. He is on the best run of his year, allowing two runs or fewer in each of his last five starts and just four earned runs over 31 innings in that stretch, with two or fewer hits allowed in three of those five outings. This is his first Subway Series start.
Carlos Rodon, Yankees. The left-hander missed most of the season with injury and has been sharp since coming back, allowing one or two runs in each of his four starts since his return. His season line is 5-3 with a 3.09 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP and 70 strikeouts in 64 innings. Behind him the Yankees have the best bullpen ERA in baseball at 3.03, and it should be rested after a Rockies series that never required much high-leverage work.
What It Means for Both Teams
The Yankees are 84-62 after sweeping Colorado, finishing it Thursday night with a 10-3 win in which Anthony Volpe hit a grand slam and drove in a career high five runs in his first game back in the majors. Wednesday’s win clinched a 34th straight winning season. They are chasing the AL East title and the first round bye that comes with it, so every September game still counts.
The Mets are 68-78 and effectively out of the playoff race, but they arrive on a four game winning streak that included a sweep of the Marlins, capped by a 15-14 win in Miami on Wednesday, and they have been one of the hotter teams in the league since the trade deadline. Juan Soto returns to the Bronx with 24 home runs and 59 RBIs, and playing spoiler against the Yankees is about as much motivation as a team out of the race can have.
The 9/11 Anniversary
Friday marks 25 years since the September 11 attacks. MLB built the 2026 schedule so the two New York clubs would be on the field together in the city that night, at Yankee Stadium this time. On the 20th anniversary in 2021 the teams met at Citi Field and the Yankees won 8-7. Expect pregame ceremonies honoring first responders and the victims, and, on the Mets side, the usual nod to Mike Piazza’s home run in the first game back in New York in 2001.
