How NFL Playoff Seeding Works
Seven teams from each conference make the playoffs. The four division winners take seeds 1 through 4 by record, and the three best remaining teams take seeds 5 through 7 as wild cards. Only the No. 1 seed in each conference gets a first round bye. When teams finish with the same record, the league’s tiebreakers decide the order, starting with head to head results and division record.
